Description

There’s no lens shift, but there is an extendable foot at the front of the projector, towards the bottom.

It also means that certain people will see ‘rainbows’, but that’s just a limitation of single-chip DLP projectors. Overall the BenQ does what it sets out to do and that is to be a party centre-piece for BBQ’s in the garden while watching the World Cup or 4K premiership football via Sky or BT. Image offset is 110% which means the picture will appear 10% of your screen’s height above the bottom edge, or below the top edge. On the debit side, the black level and the shadow detail are both poor, but that will be less of an issue in a room with ambient light. Those who want extended lamp life and have a darker room may want to consider the BenQ HT2550, which has the same gorgeous color accuracy.

In terms of design, the BenQ TK800 looks like a typical single-chip DLP projector, with a lens off-set to the right as you face the front, and an air vent over on the left. One last plus for the TK800 is that it is a brighter projector, and its increased brightness does not overly compromise color saturation to any significant degree. Tone mapping is used to try and balance the HDR image so it takes advantage of the strengths and weaknesses of the display device being used.

When compared to other HDR displays, the TK800 exhibits decent grayscale tracking in HDR Cinema mode. The latter is less successful, boosting the colours and the processing, resulting in an image that appears too artificial. It can also display frame-sequential 3D up to 720p at 120 Hz and frame-packed 3D up to 1080p at 24 Hz. Let’s be honest: if you’re projecting a big Hollywood blockbuster like Guardians of the Galaxy then you want an equally big sound to go with it. However at AVForums we like to see if we can get things more accurate and will be doing that in the next section. There’s a typical set of connections at the rear, that includes two HDMI inputs: the first is HDCP 2.
